Millennium Tower

Located at the hub of downtown Boston’s retail and transit activity, Downtown Crossing is being diversified into a mixed-use urban neighborhood. Millennium Partners are playing a key role in renovating the 8-story 1912 flagship Filene’s department store designed by architect Daniel Burnham. While the architectural team restored the building’s facades which includes extensive ornamental ironwork, Richard Burck Associates brought new life to the groundplane along the building’s south side.
RBA collaborated with Howeler+Yoon Architects in creating a lively paving pattern for Summer Street, one of Boston’s most vibrant pedestrian zones. The pattern is comprised of heavy duty pavers of varying color that give varying degrees of emphasis to building entrances, busy corners and walking zones. The four inch thick pavers are set over a robust base layer so that fire trucks can safely pass without pavers settling. This pedestrian zone is fully accessible, subtly crowned in the center with stormwater directed to new trench drains on each side of the street. New street trees could not be considered because of the shallow MBTA red line below however, there is a wonderful sense of scale and visual richness for this revitalized pedestrian space that they are not missed.
